So, Wednesday my wife and I decided to go to the Lake Elsinore Outlets because they have like 5 stores for baby stuff and that's what we spend all our money on nowadays. Anyway, I like to consider myself a defensive driver, I never follow too close and I always avoid big trucks specifically because they through dirt and debris at your car. Now we're coming home and we're at the 15/91 interchange, the one place I have to get behind the big trucks and WACK a huge rock hits the top of the windshield lined up right with my head. If it had been a bullet I would have been dead. It put a huge pit in the windshield and within a few minutes it spidered to the top and started to make it's way towards the passenger side. :(

I called my insurance guy and he refereed me to their windshield place, but I haven't called them yet. Does anyone know if someone other than the dealer had the Cube windshield? And can this be repaired with those suction cups and resin or does the how thing need to be replaced? :-\

This is the last thing we wanted to spend 400+ dollars on but such is life. The funny thing is if we had taken the Honda Fit like we planned the rock would have sailed right over and hit the car behind us.

I'll post some photos once I get a chance.

If it "line cracked" - aka spider webbed - it's gonna be a new windshield.

However, aren't you covered on your insurance policy - most insurance companies offer that service and possibly the deductible applies is all.

A good windshield repair place can repair spider webbing to some degree, but if the crack extends to the edge of the glass it's going to need replacement. - Dan

Replacement it is. The crack has reached to top edge of the windshield. The deductible applies through the insurance company and unfortunately my deductible is $500. A few weeks ago I called to get it lowered to $250, but my rep wasn't there and he never called me back. Oh well.

Does that mean we should never drive behind a Fit? :D 8)

It is only a dealership part right now. If you go through insurance it will be your deductable. If you don't it will be $857.00 for windshield, $285.00 for rubber seal, $300 (roughly) for labor. Oh and did I mention thats if the part is in the US. As of last week I was waiting for one to come from the east coast.

Wait you live in the IE?? I live in the IE.

I'm getting a bullseye on my windshield repaired tomorrow, and they assured me if need be, they can have a windshield overnighted to them, and I live in BFE Missouri. Not to rub it in, but I have 0 deductable glass coverage. Past experience has shown that i get a lot of rocks, and the extra $$$ every month sure saves your butt when the time comes for a replacement.

Wow this sucks,

I got a rock chip in mine too. It stayed small. I got a repair kit from Wally World for $11.00 and it fixed it right up. Mine was only the size of a quarter so not the same as yours.

You are right about the Fit, I had taken direct hits in my Fit with no problems, the angle of the window is so laid back.
In cop cars there are reports of bullets ricocheting off there windows due to the angle.

Our cube window is so vertical the impact is direct with no deflection.

And how much is your deductible and what is your rate/monthly bill now after the fix.
Christine, Florida is somewhat of an unusual state for car insurance. Most auto policies include free windshield replacement, or at least that's the way is was back when we lived there. I had several windshield's replaced over the years and no out of pocket cost, didn't even have to pay the deductable on my comprehensive.

But now we live in TN, our comprehensive deductable is $250.00 which includes glass etc., I called my insurance company today (The Hartford through AARP). We changed our deductable to "0" so we wouldn't have any out of pocket costs for glass replacement, theft, vandalism, etc.. I was shocked to find out it only added $58.00 to our annual cost for all three cars. - Dan

That is excellent, I have a $500.00 deductible, and the last windshield I had to replace was less than the deductible so I just ate it.

Yeah, windshield prices are all over the place. Some very expensive. I would check with your insurance co. and see what a "0" deductable on comprehensive would cost. If you're like me and over 50, I would also check with AARP for a quote. They saved us over $700.00 a year over GEICO (which we had for over 15 years at the time) on our combined auto and home insurance. - Dan

Thanks for the info Square1.

I have USAA from being active duty. It is some of the cheapest you can get, and best coverage. Once a member stay a member

The rate went up to much to bother with a lower or zero deductible. It cost the same either way kind of deal, so take the gamble you don't need it and save more now.

In 20 plus years I have made one claim so I am probably due. :(

You're 100% right on USAA. Like an idiot I didn't get USAA when I was active and now I can't get it. My son did get USAA and is now enjoying their great premiums. - Dan

My windshield was cracked within 4 days of me buying it. I don't even know how it got cracked. We called the dealer and they replaced the windshield free of charge. We did take it in to get detailed the Thursday after we bought it, because the dealership was closed by the time we left. I noticed the crack later that day, after picking my daughter up from basketball practice.

Check out www.USAA.com. They recently changed there rules, they now allow any Honorably Discharged Veteran to join, so long as you have a DD-214. They just changed this within the last few months If I remember correctly.

Like Christine, I use USAA too. They are awesome. I especially love the yearly dividend checks.
