does anyone have experience using one of these?

ive heard of them for a while now but never bothered to try.

searching on ebay for "oil filter magnet" gets over 400 hits with a wide variety of versions.

any thoughts?

i figure it would be cheap insurance for a better running engine.

There are many opinions out there for sure. I had a vehicle with a magnet installed in the transmission pan... when I took off the pan to replace the filter (after 50,000 miles) the magnet was indeed caked with small particles. Whether or not this made a difference... who knows? But I felt like it was a good idea. I'd say go for it!
Obviously it can't hurt to use one unless you install it improperly but changing the oil and filter regularly will do more good. Large particles settle overnight to the bottom of the pan a long ways away from the oil pump pickup tube so a huge magnetic attached to the bottom of the pan would work way better.

That is just one site, there are bunches out there, stick a few of these to your oil pan, remove before oil change so the particles flow out. I have never done this but it sounds like a good idea. Maybe stick one to the oil filter too. You get 30 for $10.00 so if you lose one no biggie but notice the 4Lb pull on a magnet that tiny. You may have trouble removing it from the oil pan :D Might suck a bearing down too ;D

I plan on using the ones from filtermag.com. More expensive, but I don't care. I also always use synthetic oil, and change it every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. This is the first vehicle that I'm going to be installing a pre-oiler on.

I do this to my racecar engines when I finish building them.. I use a large magnet that I got out of an old computer hard drive.. It works wonders and keeps all of the metal shavings from the maching process from getting back into the engine..
Hard Drive Magnet Yes! You are a genius! Those are wicked strong  We will stick one to a door and you cannot get it off unless you slide it and even that is difficult. I have plenty of old hard drives to play with.

Yeppers, they are crazy strong.. I put one up near my old crt monitor and it really did a job on it in a matter of seconds..

Its funny how hard drives are sensitive to magnetic force when there is a powerful magnet inside of it..
i was skeptical of the filtermag off ebay b./c the price was so low.. but it looks good. this thing is pretty heavy for the size.
