Engine Mods.....ie, turbo, etc....

28236 Views 22 Replies 16 Participants Last post by  hk20000
Does anyone know about any engine mods available for the Cube? Maybe a turbo or something along those lines? How about a chip for increased mpg or decreased mpg with "better engine performance?" I know in the US and Canada these things will come along soon enough, but why not start the conversation kinda early....

nothing performance wise is on the market yet. I can totally see A turbo kit coming in the next year but dont think you will see a computer chip.
I'm pretty sure we'll be seeing the usual stuff pretty soon, available from different manufacturers and through different vendors. Exhaust, headers, intakes, short shifters and carbon fiber parts. Shouldn't be long
I'm just excited to start seeing more......hopefully the response will be worth the wait!
Are you familiar with the Scion brand? In no time flat there was and still is a MULTITUDE of performance accessories, custom parts for the interior and exterior. Look around on the web at some of the stuff available for them. I predict that's pretty much how it'll go for the Cube and to SOME degree, the Kia Soul also.
Oh yeah, I'm sure you're right, I'm just anxious.........and excited. I don't know what I'll be able to afford to do right away anyway.
will CVT equipped cubes be able to handle any type of forced induction?

i was thinking a turbo might not work but a supercharger might be the perfect match.

another 25-50 hp would be great :)
You will break the Hamster with that stuff :-\

I see some light mods but real mods will be with the S model and the 6 Speed manual. I don't think the CVT will be able to handle the added load and acceleration well. This is where our S brother and sisters are going to get over on us and laugh as all the aftermarket will be for them and we will be on the side lines. :(

yeah, im with you 100%.. just in denial.. :(

i couldnt live without the intelligent key option. oh well.

if i do forced induction and blow the cvt.. maybe it will be time to change over to the 6spd. :)

don't forget about us base-model drivers. MWAHAHAHAHAH!!!
I would love to see someone here be the first to add a turbo kit, or an engine swap!

A good reason to save money and get the base model with the 6-speed... Like I did!

You'd be amazed at how many people I surprise with the stock 6-speed cube!

I had a couple of older dudes (mid to late 40's) in an old Porsche 944 Turbo and a brand new Mazdaspeed 3 just the other day mess with me on the highway. The dude in the 944 left the both of us like we hit the brakes. That thing was hauling! Anyway, the other guy in the Speed 3, his turbo was loud as hell and he had a mean looking exhaust out back. Once we'd get through a little traffic, he'd take off and I'd try to keep up. Of course he was pulling away, but not too fast and certainly not as fast as I thought he would. He was getting on it good too because I would see a little "puff" shoot out the back and the Speed 3 would squat down in the rear and take off. I would just drop from 6th to 4th and floor it in an attempt to keep in his draft. At one point I was cruising on his butt at 120mph! He slowed down, got in the right lane and rolled his window down. He yelled over that he was shocked as hell that I was keeping up with him as good as I was and that this little box could move that fast. He was really surprised that he wasn't pulling that hard away from me and that I was running a bone stock N/A 1.8!

Wow I'm surprised with the MS3, a stock one is a low 14, MAYBE a high 13 with a DAMN good driver. He could have been stock or just a couple bolt ons. MS3 stock exhaust is pretty good as is, most do intake and BOV for first mods. Sadly they putt that smoke stock, the MS cars run rich from the factory. lol

would be cool to see a turbo for this car, but for me I'll be happy with intake and exhaust just for fun, my play toy is my Datsun, the cube is my gas saving DD.
If I had it my way, I'd have a small centrifugal supercharger running at about 6psi, an air to air intercooler, open up the intake a little, a nice stainless header and a mild stainless exhaust that's just about as quiet as stock. I hate noisy exhaust systems, especially on a 4-banger.

All four of those mods combined would be good for a real world 70hp and torque (190hp and 200ft lbs or thereabouts), which means somewhere in the neighborhood of 160-170hp to the ground. I'd be happy with that and would easily shock the hell out of a lot more people! ;D

And just as a side note, I've found that 3rd gear is where this little thing really pulls hard and will hang with a lot of vehicles under WOT. I still hate that damn hesitation of the drive-by-wire crap during fast shift changes. I'm trying to compensate with the throttle, but still feel it. I want a real throttle cable again darn it!!!!!
