CVT Filter VS Screen

1242 Views 20 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  hondo1
I'm wondering if I really need to drop the pan and clean the screen, or if changing the filter would be enough. The I know the screen catches debris and the magnets should be cleaned though. Bought my cube with 93k and immidiately did a fluid change. Have 135k now. Runs good, but need to do at least the filter and fluid.

Thanks!

I did both since to get to the little round pleated filter you have to drop the pan. No biggie if you don't change the screen. But be on lookout for any excessive deposits, bits, or pieces. Clean magnet. I used amsoil cvt and the results are great. Much more solid firm feeling.

I’m in agreement with Skylinekd. Drop that pan to change the filter and clean the screen and magnets. I’m coming due for another transmission service, and I’ll try the Amsoil fluid. Thanks for the tip!

I’m including some pictures from “The car wizard “ YouTube channel. They gave me a nice visual when I did my first service. Fortunately, my tranny didn’t show near the signs of this one.

My son has a 2011 Cube 170,000 miles with 60,000 on rebuilt CVT trying to make it last 2 more years. I ordered the pan gasket & the internal filter from Nissan. Check out this video below I finally found it!

I am curious to why he cleans the filter rather than replace it, but other than that great share (y)

I think 🤔 parts might be difficult to find in Vancouver, Canada. Specially, if you have a mobile service repair shop.
Anyhow, I completed my son’s cube trans service yesterday. The 2011 Cube is the same exact flat silver filter in Asian Mechanic video. It was fairly clean the filter. All I had to do is clean it and reuse it. Also it was a factory rebuilt transmission so the transmission gasket was perfect was reusable. It was still good. but I had dealer change the fluid about 12,000 miles ago.. Not shown in the video. I did replace the canister type filter with a new one. no more I cann't do it myself😝. Definitely use only OEM NS2 trans fluid No aftermarket.

All flat filter bolts are the same except this one is shorter! Be careful don't mix up.

Can confirm I had one short screw and the same transmission/strainer/filter/gasket in my 2009 cube when I also recently dropped the pan and replaced the fluid, paper filter, metal strainer, and gasket (although probably could have reused). Went with the oem gasket rather than the one that came with the new ATP 427 strainer. Used Idemitsu type N (NS-2) fluid. Working fine for 1000 miles so far but I have had a few anxiety nightmares about it.

How dirty was the fluid & the filters? Our 2011 Cube fluid has been changed twice approx every 30,000 miles. Total mileage 72,000 miles on rebuilt cvt. Motor 178,000. This confirms that you must do a minimum drain & refilled max every 15,000 miles or fluid gets dirty real fast if you want to prolong the life of the CVT which is damn expensive.

There was some metal in the edges of the strainer. The paper filter was dark. The fluid was dark. Unsure how many miles were on this fluid but approximately 3 years since it had a rebuilt transmission put in by the previous owner. Wasn't as much on the magnets/pan as I might have feared same with the strainer. This is a 2009 cube and had the fluid changed just shy of 150,000 miles about to roll over to 151k.

I'm guessing since there weren't many metal particles on the magnets/pan for approx 3 years that fluid was drained & refilled at regular intervals. The screen looks clean from the photo so how many miles on rebuilt cvt? I told my son to drive it easily with no fast acceleration this is his first car must last 2 more years. I am not spending a dime more for another rebuilt cvt this one cost $3500 US.
Word of caution when driving in the hot Summertime weather. If cvt oil gets overheated it will go into limp mode to protect the CVT from further damage. I know this sounds crazy in hot weather put the heat on max def turn-off AC. This helps to dissipate the cvt oil temp. This happened to my daughter's 2009 Nissan Sentra we purchased new 3 times once during a long road trip to Miami, FL. However, I only did drain & refilled every 60,000 miles and never replaced the filters as I did with the Cube. However, the 09 Sentra lasted 11 years and sold for $900 in 2020 OEM CVT was never replaced with 218,000 original miles by the grace of god!

I'm pretty sure that CVT hadn't been touched since it was put in. I unfortunately don't have a great sense of how many miles were on it. Somewhere between 31-60k miles if I had to give a range estimate? (Which is a bit of a range) Being in the North East we don't have to deal with much heat which I'm sure has helped it. I also flushed the radiator and it appeared to have the original OEM factory blue coolant from 2008 when the car was manufactured being a 2009. Tempting to put a thermostat controlled CVT cooler on it but not sure it is worth the cost given the age of the vehicle and the temperatures it experiences. I unfortunately tend to accelerate harder than I probably should for the CVT's sake on highway on ramps but what good is a working transmission in a wrecked car.

edit I'm pretty sure the majority of the miles on the CVT were highway miles which also likely helped it.

The book value for a 2011 Cube with 178,000 miles is approx $1300-$1500. I try to do most of the work. I just spend $800 on the exhaust & tailpipe back to the catalytic converter at Meineke. Also another $500 for 4 new FS tires at Costco. Definitely cheaper to keep Cube than buy a newer vehicle. I also replaced the tensioner pullies, belt motor mount & dogbone mount. I saved a ton of money doing it myself. I had to drill out a hole in the wheel well to access the bolt for tensioner crazy. Replace the metal 16" water pipe that was rusted and mounted on the bottom of the motor by the radiator. This was an OEM part.
I'm trying to decide how long is realistic to be able to keep it running. Just finished up some bondo work on the rear wheel wells. Have 4 new good year tires on it (first ordered the wrong tires to Costco they could get me Michelin 15" but this cube has 16" tires despite being a base model from what I can tell? Must have been an option?) serves me right for ordering based on the VIN rather than checking the tires was just before midnight an was going to lose a promotion. So I had to get the tires elsewhere. I'm thinking as long as the rebuilt CVT holds out and the timing chain holds out... a CAT replacement may or may not be worthwhile if it comes up. The underside of it looks surprisingly good considering it has lived its life in the rust belt. I'm thinking yearly CVT fluid changes are in my future though at a minimum. Probably worth replacing that filter also but that means new gaskets etc.

edit it got new akebono front pads and new slide pins recently I put on, got new rotors a year ago, new starter within the last year, new battery within the last year, new dogbone torque mount, bled the brake fluid, new kyb rear shocks, new oil pan within the last year, the list goes on. It doesn't look that good but seems pretty mechanically sound.

It sounds decent the Nissan motors are superior compared to the garbage CVTs. We never had any major problems with the motors. It sounds great did you change the spark plugs? I did it very late on the Cube at 167459 miles. Yes me too a laundry list of repairs, since I purchased it for my son, used in 2012-13 for $13500 with 10,000 miles. I shouldn't be complaining not bad after all. Lesson learn never again any type of CVT! PS CVT failed at 106,000 miles. I thought about the external cooler but too much work gotta take the bumper off to gain access & you have to figure out on the trans cooler which line is hot or cold.
Put in new Denso spark plugs just after the CVT fluid along with cleaning the throttle body and intake. New cabin air filter last year, new air filter and cleaned the MAF sensor 1k miles ago or so also. Just started running the mobil 1 extended 20k mile high mileage oil and filter in it planning to change it every 5k miles though. Has had 5k mile oil changes for most of the life of the vehicle as far as I'm aware. Previously hadn't been running high mileage oil and NAPA Gold filters when I had a mechanic I trust working on it and they did the oil pan. The shop across the street didn't want to put the rebuilt starter in for me as it started every time and drove there but it had to be whacked once to get off a dead spot so I insisted. Otherwise done most of the work myself.

The good thing is that the parts are cheap & relatively available on Amazon.
