I am going to have to pour out a 40 of Mobile1 in honor of our dearly departed steed, Landy. We are grateful to her for her devoted and loyal service, including a cameo in a K&N commercial as a stunt double for the Drive Around the World Land Rovers, and wish her the best on her great safari in the sky. Here's hoping she sees lots of giraffes through her giraffe windows.

And the new arrival:

Don't feel bad DavidV. I live in a rather crappy $28,000 house with peeling paint, a cracked water line, and a leaky roof and got rid of a 13 MPG wasting 1992 Ford F-150. I'm supposed to feel ashamed about taking the $4500 too. I'm off to a candle lit room to whip myself in penance.

You live in a nice house like that and yet you take other people's money? Man this is getting out of hand :(
You do realize that's they're own money + their own tax $$$ they're spending too right? I would have done it if I had something worth more in C4C then on the open market. Why should only the ones who couldn't otherwise afford it get it?

Congrats on your new purchase!!!!

The program isn't charity/welfare.

The purpose of the program, as I understand it, is to get people to buy cars they wouldn't otherwise buy right now in order to funnel cash into U.S. car dealers, manufacturers, and banks.

I would have waited and kept driving the Disco for another year or so, but opted to buy the Cube now based on the C4C program funds being available.

If this were welfare/charity/hardship funds, they would screen for income.

Secondarily, the program is designed to get gas guzzlers off the road. I think my Disco (rated at 14mpg) qualifies.

FWIW, I could have just as easily used the money towards a $85,000 22mpg Lotus Exige or $110,000 Tesla Roadster - that's not the point.

Besides - we literally just built that house. We are the living, breathing definition of house poor (especially because we just had a baby). No way I was prepared to buy a car now before this deal came along.

Hence the stripped down S model ???

You seriously let that car go for $4,500? What was the blue book on it? It looked nice on the outside.

Too bad it will get crushed in 6 Months. Could have been salvaged for parts for more $$

You were still allowed to negotiate your best trade on that vehicle, but not to expect more than scrap value. He could have gotten $4500 plus whatever a junkyard would pay for it for parts. I believe in the end the only part that had to be destroyed is the engine, and it is to be done by opening it up and pouring in a chemical. I'd guess it's an acid that etches all of the machined parts to the point of being unsalvagable. The woman in the finance office was going over this info while I was there. I got a whole extra $100 for my truck, but they took $50 of it back to charge me for their cost of taking it to the junkyard. That seems fair. Not.

I read an article on the subject and the article mentioned any vehicle worth over the $4500 threshold would have to go thru the normal trade in process. It was an article so maybe they missed the research. It was on the Fox News website.

But interesting, thanks

In my area you get $8K from the GOVERNMENT in FREE money to buy a new house. That is 8K in our "Taxpayer" money to buy it. I think that is what None is focusing on in everyones frenzy with the cash to clunkers is we the tax payer are shouldering your profit. I am not exactly excited about it as I work hard and pay taxes well, so those who provide less than I do can profit from this offer and I profit none as I have worked hard to tread less buying a Honda Fit, I recycle huge, Compost my kitchen waste and I pay the price for those who waste at will. I put out 1 half of one trash can of garbage on Friday and my neighbors all have 2 or 3 full cans of trash and I still pay the same as them. 90% of their rubbish is recyclable.

I strive to tread less on the environment and work hard to profit from my efforts but it seems to us the slobs are reaping the benefit of our actions.

Sorry Just my $0.02

This isn't my "clunker", but I traded this in too. It used to have an aftermarket deck, CD changer, subs, etc., but I'd already removed them for the trade. Never had an issue with this ride. Hate to see it go, but I have no reason to have two small cars. Goodbye friend.

I think the point that some people seem to be missing here is that not everyone tha'ts using the C4C program is on welfare, receiving food stamps, etc. A large portion of the people using the programe ARE taxpayers themselves. There are people that have paid into the system for years and years. If they can get a break then why shouldn't they take it? If I could have used the C4C program I would have... because for YEARS I've paid into the tax system and I've gotten SQUAT for it... and when it comes time for me to retire there will be NO social security left for me. My tax dollars are paying for other people to eat, go to school, get medical care, etc... why shouldn't I be able to get at least a little of that back while doing something to help the environment (which is the real intended purpose of the program)?

But then it should be an all-or-nothing program. Why only allow a certain privileged few to take from others? Especially when we did not vote on this...

Who are these "priviledged few" that you speak of? The rules for the program are pretty clear and apply to anyone with a qualifying vehicle. Whether or not you get the money depends on whether or not you have a vehicle that's on the list of vehicle considered to be horrible for the environment.

It had 170k, Bluebooked between $1,500-$2,500, and needed $3k worth of work.

Also, the stripped down base model was as much about getting a 6 speed as it was saving money. Still, we got it with interior design package and splash guards for a hair over $10k out the door including taxes and fees thanks to the C4C program (we negotiated to 2.6% over invoice on the Cube).

Not a bad deal...

So you don't take any exemptions, credits, or deductions on your tax form, right?

Gulp. I'm supposed to sign the papers on my Cube at 11:00 AM Friday morning. I believe they had already applied for and received my voucher. I sure hope so. I'm sweating now. They got it in yesterday and prepped it today. This could suck. Alot.

If they can't do the voucher, then I would think it is like any other form of payment that never materialized... you simply walk away. Don't stress it bro.
