A/C Cluster LED Swap... Fun Times

So I was a little bored today, and decided to swap the LED's in the standard A/C cluster from Orange to Blue.. The orange really didn't go well with anything else in the car, except the main gauge cluster(which I will also be changing to blue)...

The only thing I don't like(which I will probably try to fix) is the heat side. The LED doesn't really shine through all that well.

Anyway here's the outcome

And a close up.

Looks awesome!! I want to do that to my interior dash. How easy is the LED swap and what bulbs did you use?

Re: A/C Cluster LED Swap... Fun Times

Actually it's not too bad.. I think there were 10 led's total, but I bought 30 so I can do the gauges when i get a little more time..

Here's the website I ordered them from

http://www.oznium.com/plcc-2

And then I just followed a guide for a Scion.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NqNJR2vFHMk

The negative terminal is the one with the notch, not backwards like the video.

I tested the original LED's by taking 2 AA batteries and touched the sides on the board(to see which ones I needed to change).. Just don't touch the small ones(the orange ones that are on the toggle switches), I burned my recycle air one out.

I think the part that took the most time was getting the knobs all lined back up. They all just pop off anyway. If you have any questions while you're doing it, just let me know, but the video was all I needed. This was my first try at LED swapping, but it went pretty well.

Hmmmmm, I don't quite trust myself with a solder... LOL Although I might be able to get a friend to do it...

Thank you though for that tutorial! +1

Cubert....

I like this mod. I did the same thing in my smart (though I got LEDs that were way too small, so hard to solder).

On the "heat" side, on the smart I put white LEDs behind the "red" part. Is that possible on the cube?

Nice mod!!!

Cheers!

Re: A/C Cluster LED Swap... Fun Times

Well thank you!

There are some solder points for LED's there, however I tried to re-Solder some of the orange ones in the empty spots, and they didnt work... I was a little short on time so I couldn't troubleshoot, but there are 3 Solder points along the red side that could be used if they were enabled..

Re: A/C Cluster LED Swap... Fun Times

Cubert,

In the video it says something about high output LED's, u need to change the resistor. When u did urs was it just a straight change of the LED's and nothing else? I might have to look into this for my cube, mmmmm?

Re: A/C Cluster LED Swap... Fun Times

Yep, straight change... PLCC-2 Led's. After I got the hang of the unsoldering process it went pretty quick. Taking it out and putting it in was actually harder than the swap..
