Cracking noise when cold outside

When the outside temperature is below 45F or so, there's a cracking noise that seems to come from the top of the windshield every time I drive over a bump in my 2009 SL. This does not happen when the temperature is warmer. It sounds like the windshield is going to crack or pop out. I'm taking it in for its 7,500 mile service tomorrow, and if it's cold enough, I'll ask the dealer's mechanic to ride around the block with me so he/she can hear it. I'm curious if anyone else is experiencing this.

Re: Cracking noise when cold outside

I've heard it in my other vehicles too. Likely the seals hardening from the cold and not flexing with the normal stresses. Mine usually goes away after the inside temp warms up.

Re: Cracking noise when cold outside

It does seem like cold brings out noises in cars. I guess that's because different materials react in different ways and different rates as the temperature drops, but mostly, they tend to resist movement more !

Re: Cracking noise when cold outside

I live in AZ where it's really warm and most mornings it's 50 or warmer here now and I get that strange cracking sound it's almost a pop and it sounds like it's coming from the windshield where it meets the dash ... usually when I first get in the car and start driving. I'm not sure if it's something to worry about or not but I'm def going to keep an eye on it and let the dealership know at my next service. I remember hearing a similar sound in an older cars but I've never experienced it in one of my cars and def not in a newer car.

Lovin' the cube!

I have the same problem in cold weather. Has Nissan done anything to fix this on other Cubes?

It is where the dash meets the windshield. You can press down on the dash board, or better fill the gap with pipe insulation or some other creative solution. A light press usually works good enough for me.

I honestly haven't noticed it in mine...Had it since 2012 and been through 5 Canadian winters.
